Well, I did it, lads and lasses.
I set out this year to write and publish an eBook every month. This weekend, I submitted Big Teeth, a steampunk retelling of the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. It’s a prequel of sorts to Bitter Cold, the novella that is due to come out next month as part of Once Upon a Clockwork Tale. You won’t need to read one to enjoy the other, but if you do enjoy one, it’s a good bet you’ll like the other. Lulabelle, the main character in Big Teeth, reappears briefly in Bitter Cold (along with a certain toothy automaton, in a manner of speaking).
It’s available on both Smashwords and Amazon. The Smashwords version is free, but requires that you set up an account and copy it over to your eReader. Smashwords doesn’t sync wirelessly with Kindles or other devices. If you’re not terribly tech-savvy, or would just like to pay for the story, you could buy it on Amazon for $.99. My royalty will be $.35, or exactly enough to buy a cup of coffee down at Butt Drugs.
Full Disclosure: at about 6,000 words or 15 pages, it’s not a full novel. It’s a short story just shy of a novelette. But you’d pay 5 times that for a latte. So if you think you’d get at least 1/5 the enjoyment of a latte out of it, feel free to pony up.
At this point, I have three more steampunk fairy tales planned:
- Bad Dreams (based on Sleeping Beauty)
- Bête Noire (based on Beauty & the Beast, set in New Orleans)
- Bedtime Story (based on The Princess & The Pea)
Aladdin is also a possibility (let me know if you come up with a good two word title that starts with “B”!)
